Sophia Koukourli - Art Psychotherapist
The period we are going through, right before Easter, often rises in psychotherapy issues that concern the loss and the mourning.
The loss is connected with the parting. Facts that relate with loss, such as the loss of a beloved person, of a work or a personal relationship, could often prove to be aggravating, for the mental health of a person.
Life is full of separations and mourning. When the loss is acknowledged it means that the person who mourns, recognizes the absence. At this point, the absence reconciles with the lost presence and begins the process of the mourning.
Art therapy, through the creative procedure, deeply helps the person, in the inner struggle he experiences. The contact with the materials, the colors and the images, offers relaxation to the person in treatment and lead to the creation of spontaneous painting art, which reflects the emotions that overwhelm him at the given moment. It is a soothing healing process, which gives outlets and ways of dealing with loss and mourning.
“Knowing thyself” (gnothi sauton) is the actual getting to knowing ourselves. Its true essence lies in caring for the soul, self-awareness, awareness of our skills, abilities and potential. It helps us understand the way we could act in order to gain the real self-awareness.
